Defibrillators

Our heartbeat originates from an electrical impulse, generated by a specialised piece of muscle in the heart wall called the pacemaker or sinoatrial node (SA node).

The SA node generates our heartbeat rhythmically, but sometimes, an abnormal heart rhythm can develop, called an arrhythmia. A cardiac arrest is caused by a dangerous arrhythmia.  During cardiac arrest, the heart quivers, or fibrillates, instead of pumping blood effectively.

Death can occur in minutes unless a productive heart rhythm – one that is able to supply blood to the major organs, including the brain and heart – is restored.

A defibrillator is a device that can be used to deliver a large electric current to the heart of someone in cardiac arrest to try to restore a productive heart rhythm.

By using a defibrillator on a cardiac arrest patient before an ambulance arrives, the person’s chance of survival can be significantly increased.

It is estimated that about 10 per cent of the ability to restart the heart is lost with every minute that the heart is in fibrillation.

Locate your nearest automated external defibrillator using the website https://www.defibfinder.uk.

We provide up to date information on defibrillator locations across the UK, using data from The Circuit, the national defibrillator network. Enter your location to find the nearest defibrillators to you. Then simply click on the defibrillator icons for further information, such as availability, access information and directions.

Disclaimer: Please always dial 999 immediately in an emergency and they will direct you to your nearest defibrillator.

Please note, we are still working hard to populate The Circuit with the data on the tens of thousands of defibrillators across the UK, by asking guardians to register. This means that Defib Finder will only be able to show you your nearest defibrillator that is registered on The Circuit and where we have been given permission to share the data.  This will be subject to change as more defibrillators are registered on The Circuit.

IOW Defibrillators are pleased to team up and be together in awareness with Get Heart charged.

Hopefully in stopping preventable deaths and preparing communities for a sudden cardiac emergency, ensures heart conditions are found and treated.

The charity was formed after I personally had a sudden cardiac arrest in 2017, this brought to my attention not only the importance of the availability of life saving defibrillators, but also the need for everyone willing to learn the capability to give Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation  or CPR as its known along with simple first contact assistance.

The charity has grown from strength to strength with the great support of businesses and the public alike and we now have over 34 sited defibrillators across the Island, with additional third party ones being added daily.

Although we regularly service the units that we supply, there are also several third-party units available to you, so it’s essential to read their instructions carefully.
